The 12th Weekly Meeting of Reading Club in 2022 Fall Semester
On December 7, 2022, the Institute for Medicine and Civilization (IMC) held the 12th weekly meeting for this semester. The meeting was presided over by Sujuan WANG and recorded by Buyu CAO. Yihang GAO shared the content of “Healing and Curing: History of the disease in Africa from the Perspective of Colonial Medicine”.
Yihang GAO made a detailed report on the research background and significance, research stages, research time and scope, and future plans on the history of plague in Africa. She sorted out the four stages and three paths for the history of plague, and then discussed the analysis of time and scope. Finally, based on the inadequacies of the current research, Yihang GAO also proposed her further plans on the history of plague in Africa.
After the presentation, teachers and students warmly discussed the concepts and connections between colonial medicine and tropical medicine, etc. Prof. Huacheng LI pointed out that there existed both overlaps and differences between tropical medicine and colonial medicine. Since the colonial medicine contains both colonial and medical characteristics, the premise of how to go beyond its coloniality and focus on medical parts is to clarify the key properties of colonial medicine, and this question still needs to be further explored.
