Brief Introduction ofInstitute for Medicine and Civilization,Shaanxi Normal University
Originated fromtheResearch Center for Social History of Medicine(RCSHM)in 2014,the InstituteforMedicineand CivilizationatShaanxi Normal University(IMC, SNNU) isone ofthe earliest academic organization specialized inmedical social historyin China,with Professor Li Huacheng as the president. Guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind,IMC isfulfilling the responsibility ofcarryingout teaching and researchin the field ofmedicine and civilization,fosteringhigh-level talents, producinghigh-qualityachievements, actively promotingthe transformation ofacademicachievements, constantly enhancingthesocial service function,thuscontributingto the greater goal of building a human community with a shared future,boosting research inthefieldof medical social historyand exploringnew academic research modes that offer China’s insight into the world.
After years of development, IMC has a variety of academic resources and facilities available to support the research work,and has made remarkable achievements in cultivating talents, doing scientific research, carrying out social services,etc.It publishes an outstanding academic periodical calledJournal of Medicine and Civilization, and is building the“Medicine and Civilization”library. As an important institute in the School of History and Civilization, IMC actively cultivates master and doctoral students in the field of medical social history and world history, and accepts postdoctoral researchers to carry out cooperative research.
Now, IMC has 21 core researchers, 14 part-time researchers and 5 invited researchers, and also built a research team studying the social history of medicinealong the Belt and Road, including 20 team members from 6 universities and research institutions.Theinstitute members have undertook several scientific research projects, including National Social Science Fund,etc, published hundreds of monographs and scientific articles, and have won several awards in teaching and research. IMC always stands at the forefront of carrying out academic exchanges and social services. Up to November, 2022, IMC has held 13 high-level academic conferences and 68 high-level lectures. Since 2016, the institute has continued to carry out a large-scale and long-term“Oral History Research Project of Medical Personnel, Medical Affairs and Medical History in Rural China”.By September 2022, 13 surveys have been successfully conducted. In addition, IMC has also launched the first and second“Medicine and Civilization”National Science Popularization Writing Competition. After the outbreak of COVID-19, the institute quicklyorganized scholars to set up a plan of“Epidemic and Society”Research and Practice, and held a series of online lectures in“Pandemic and Society in human history”, benefiting thousands of audience.
